Open wide thy shimmering heart

“The first of all the commandments is: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.”

Jesus, quoted in the King James Version of the Bible, Mark 12:29-31

On Christmas Day, Christians celebrated the birth of Jesus. This event brings great joy, for his birth brings hope to the world. Hope that there is a better world somewhere, and that we will find it some day. Hope that all will be well, in spite of our feeble efforts to bring about world peace and to bring heaven to Earth. With the help of the one born on Christmas, these things will be given to us.

When Jesus was asked to choose the greatest of the commandments given to Moses, Jesus answered with the above summary of all the commandments. The ONLY thing Jesus asks of us is LOVE. For God and for one another. On this celebration of his birth, let us vow to work every day to find LOVE in our hearts for God and for one another.

Jesus doesn’t have to define LOVE. His life defines LOVE of God and humanity. His life shows us a better way. Better than judging, and keeping track, and condemning our fellow man. Have we learned this lesson? Let us open our hearts and hear God’s voice. Let us have compassion for others and forgive them seventy times seven. In Jesus’ name. For his sake. For the sake of all that is good and honorable and wise, let us honor something higher than being safe. Our souls want us to remember what we really are and what our neighbors really are.

“God, I have not learned the lesson Jesus wants me to learn. I am afraid to open my heart and let all that LOVE flood into it. What if nobody else does? What will happen to me? Can I survive in a world of LOVE? I am so afraid. Please help me follow your and Jesus’ commands and help me LOVE. Thank you, God. I love you.”
