“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.”

Helen Keller

Helen Keller was blind and deaf from an acute illness at the age of 19 months. While she never regained those senses, she was not as limited as we often think she was. She had many senses that did work well, including her ability to perceive with her heart. In fact, she was quite perceptive and, during her life, impressed people all over the world with her depth of understanding.

If I had only my heart to perceive with, I believe I would develop its perceptions and distinctions to a greater degree than I have. In fact, as I learn to LOVE more fully, I believe I am developing my heart. What can we perceive with our hearts? I can feel LOVE in my heart. Can I use my heart to distinguish truth from untruth? Can I use my heart to connect with another person? Is it my heart that recognizes people I have never met before, but who I know are significant to me?

One time, when I was working as a hospital chaplain, I was assisting a family in the Emergency area following a death. After meeting the wife of the deceased, the two of us welcomed additional family members as they arrived. I stood at the entrance to the curtained-off area and she stood at the head of the litter where her husband lay. After ten minutes or so of welcoming people and sending them over to her, I happened to looked over at her and she also looked up at me. Our eyes met and I felt a lightning bolt travel between us, as though connecting us beyond physical reality.

I believe there are many ways we connect with each other, through our hearts’ understanding, that is beyond our heads’ knowledge.

“God, thank you for making me a multi-dimensional being, with one foot on earth and one foot in heaven, figuratively speaking. My heart and my LOVE are beyond my earthly understanding, and yet, they are an important part of my earthly life. I wish to grow in my ability to use my heart to perceive, honoring its truth beyond that of my head. I ask your help in achieving this. Thank you, God. I LOVE you.”Express the beauty in your heart
